Rainer Pöttgen (* 1966 in Meschede ) is a German chemist ( solid state chemistry ) and lecturer at the University of Münster at the Institute for Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry.

After graduating from high school in 1985, Pöttgen studied chemistry at the University of Münster with a diploma in 1990 (structural chemical investigations ) and a doctorate under Wolfgang Jeitschko in 1993 (structure and properties of ternary rare earth transition metal carbides and similar compounds). As a post-doctoral student he worked at the CNRS Laboratory for Solid State Chemistry in Bordeaux with Bernard Chevalier and Jean Etourneau and in 1994/95 with Arndt Simon at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart . From 1996 he returned to Münster, where he completed his habilitation in 1997 (preparative, crystal chemical and magnetic investigations on binary and ternary intermetallic europium compounds with a contribution on intergrowth structures in intermetallic compounds). In 2000/01 he was Professor of Inorganic Solid State Chemistry at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and from 2001 Professor of Inorganic Chemistry in Münster.

He deals with intermetallic compounds, in particular of rare earths, and their electrical and magnetic properties depending on their structure and, among other things, with materials for lithium high-performance batteries.

He is editor of the Zeitschrift für Naturforschung B and the Zeitschrift für Kristallographie as well as co-editor of the International Journal of Inorganic Chemistry . He is also on the advisory boards of the Journal of Solid State Chemistry , Research Letters in Inorganic Chemistry, and the Zeitschrift für Allgemeine und Inorganische Chemie, and was on the Chemistry of Materials .

In 1997 he received the Bennigsen Foerder Prize from North Rhine-Westphalia.
