Gamal Awad (born August 9, 1955 in Alexandria , † November 6, 2004 ibid) was an Egyptian squash player .

Career

Gamal Awad was one of the world's top squash players from the mid-1970s. From 1977 and 1978 he won the British Amateur Championships . At the British Open he reached the final in 1983, which he lost to Jahangir Khan in three sets. In May 1983 he reached fifth place in the world rankings.

With the Egyptian national team he took part in the World Cup in 1976 , 1977 and 1985 . Between 1976 and 1986 he was seven times in the main field of the individual world championships. His best result was reaching the semi-finals in 1983 . As with the British Open, he was defeated by Jahangir Khan in three sets.

In 1987 he ended his career due to a persistent knee injury. On November 6, 2004, he died in his sleep of a heart attack . His older brother Mohammed Awad was also a squash player.
