The Alexander Stadium ( English Alexander Stadium ) is an athletics stadium in the Perry Park district of the English city of Birmingham , United Kingdom . The facility was opened in 1976 and offers space for 12,700 spectators with 7,000 covered seats. At concerts there is enough capacity for around 20,000 visitors.
The stadium meets the standards of the British Athletics Federation (UKA) and the International Athletics Federation (IAAF). In addition to the numerous sports facilities there are u. a. also conference and seminar rooms as well as other meeting facilities. It also houses the headquarters of the British Athletics Association (UKA).
Every year there the British Athletics Championships and to see Diamond League meetings more belonging to British Grand Prix instead.
In December 2017, Birmingham was selected to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games . The stadium is being expanded for this major event. 40,000 places will be available for the Commonwealth Games, then the space will be reduced to 20,000. The costs of the measures should amount to 80 million euros . The total cost of the event is expected to be 860 million euros, of which the government will take over around 645 million euros.
