The Irkutsk State University ( Russian Иркутский Государственный Университет Irkutskij Gossudarstvennyj Uniwersitet , English Irkutsk State University ), short ISU , is a state university in the Russian city ​​of Irkutsk (as of 2013 with over 16,000 students).

The university was founded in 1918 and is now divided into a total of 14 faculties and institutes.

history

In 1919, a year after the university was founded, the Institute of the East was founded, teaching Sanskrit, Mongolian, Chinese, Tibetan and Japanese. In addition, the physical-mathematical faculty was founded. In 1920 the medical branch became an independent faculty. In 1930 the university was reorganized and the institutes for medicine, finance and education were established. During the Second World War, over 100 university employees went to the front from 1941 to 1945. In 1947 research institutes for physics and chemistry were founded. In 1949 the Faculty of Geology was founded and a branch of the East Siberian Academy of Sciences was opened in Irkutsk.
