Ulrich "Uli" Liebsch (born August 17, 1966 in Geretsried ) is a German ice hockey coach who was the head coach of the Ravensburg Towerstars in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 2011/12 season . As a player he was active in the Bundesliga and the DEL from 1984 to 2001 .

Career as a player

Uli Liebsch began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown Geretsried . For the first team of TuS he only played in the 1984/85 season in what was then the 2nd League South and finished last with the team there, which would have meant relegation. However, he stayed in the second division and was hired by EHC Freiburg , with whom he was promoted to the Bundesliga in 1988. In total, the attacker stayed in Breisgau for five years.

In 1990 the Cologne EC brought him to the Rhine. Liebsch stayed in the cathedral city for four years, and in 1994 he returned to his hometown. He supported Geretsried for one season in the 1st League South. Because the foreigner limit was relaxed in the DEL, which is why many German players switched to the second division. In 1995 he was hired again in the highest German league: The Preussen Devils took him under contract. In 1998 he moved to SC Bietigheim-Bissingen in the second highest division.

Career as a coach

During his engagement with the Steelers, he already accompanied the club's youth work. Therefore, he moved there in 2001 to the coaching bench. All junior teams were promoted to the highest divisions under his leadership. Due to his success, he took over the post of head coach in 2004, and in 2005 also that of sporting director at SC Bietigheim-Bissingen. In December 2006, when the goal of reaching the play-offs was in danger, he was fired from the Steelers.

For the 2007/08 season he joined the coaching team of the DEL Club Iserlohn Roosters , where he worked as an assistant coach behind the Canadian Rick Adduono . Iserlohn's manager Karsten Mende played with Liebsch at the Kölner Haien between 1991 and 1994, which is why the contacts were quickly made. Also in the next year he remained assistant coach under the new coach Steve Stirling . When this was released early, however, Liebsch rose to head coach of the Roosters. After the season he was confirmed as the new coach for the 2009/10 season and thus became the first German head coach in the Roosters' DEL history. On December 18, 2009, he extended his contract to 2011. In his first season as chief executive, Liebsch led his team to eleventh place, but was dismissed in December 2010. In mid-July 2011 he was introduced as the new head coach of Towerstars Ravensburg .
