Sven Butenschön (born March 22, 1976 in Itzehoe ) is a former German - Canadian ice hockey player and current coach who played 144 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins , Edmonton Oilers , New York Islanders and Vancouver between 1993 and 2013 Canucks in the National Hockey League and 430 others for the Adler Mannheim and Nürnberg Ice Tigers in the German Ice Hockey League on the position ofDefender has denied. Between 2008 and 2010 Butenschön was part of the German national team , with which he took part in two world championships at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , Canada . He has been the head coach of the University of British Columbia ice hockey team since summer 2016 .
Career
Player career
Butenschön was born in Itzehoe , but moved to Canada with his parents when he was two years old . Since he has both German and Canadian citizenship, according to the rules of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF , he had to have played in Germany for at least two years before the defender was allowed to be appointed to the German national team for the first time in 2008 .
Butenschön spent his first years in professional ice hockey from 1993 to 1996 with the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League . Then the left shooter played a season with the Cleveland Lumberjacks in the International Hockey League . At the NHL Entry Draft 1994 Butenschön was selected in the third round in 57th place by the Pittsburgh Penguins and finally completed his first eight appearances in the National Hockey League in the 1997/98 season . Until 2001, the defender played for the Penguins and their farm teams Syracuse Crunch ( AHL ), Houston Eros (IHL) and from 1999 to 2001 for the Wilkes-Barre Penguins from the AHL. In the minor league , the German-Canadian was considered one of the best defenders and was appointed to the league's all-star game . During the 2000/01 season Butenschön moved to the Edmonton Oilers , here the defender played seven NHL appearances before he again ran for a farm team, this time the Hamilton Bulldogs . In 2002, the left shooter moved to the New York Islanders , and he spent the 2004/05 lockout season in Germany with Adler Mannheim . After another season in the NHL, this time at the Vancouver Canucks , the 2006/07 defender returned to Mannheim, where he signed a contract that was later extended to 2011 and won the German Ice Hockey Cup and the championship with the Eagles . In May 2011 the defender was signed by the Nürnberg Ice Tigers . His contract there ended in 2013.
International
Butenschön was in November 2008, his debut in the German national team , participated in the Germany Cup 2008 , the World Championships in 2009 and 2010 and the 2010 Winter Olympics in part.
Coaching career
Butenschön worked after the end of his playing career from 2013 to 2015 as a trainer for "Leslie Global Sports", the company of Bob Leslie . There he was responsible for training defenders at ice hockey camps.
In the 2015/16 season Butenschön was assistant coach of the ice hockey team at the University of British Columbia and was promoted to head coach in mid-September 2016.
