Birkir Arnason (born July 20, 1987 ) is an Icelandic ice hockey player who has been under contract with Ísknattleiksfélagið Björninn in the Icelandic ice hockey league since 2011 . His younger brother Sigurdur is also an Icelandic international.

Career

Birkir Arnason began his career as a hockey player with Skautafélag Akureyrar in his northern Icelandic hometown, with which he became Icelandic champions in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2008 . In 2009 he moved to Gladsaxe SF , for which he was on the ice for two years in the 1st division , the second highest Danish ice hockey division . He returned to Iceland for the 2011/12 season and has since played for Ísknattleiksfélagið Björninn . With the club from the capital Reykjavík , he won the Icelandic championship again in 2012.

International

Birkir played for Iceland as a teenager. He participated in the U18 World Championships in 2003 in Division III and in 2004 and 2005 in Division II as well as in the Division II tournaments of the U-20 World Championships in 2003 , 2004 and 2007 and the Division III tournaments of the U-20 World Championships 2005 and 2006 .

For the men's national team , Birkir played in Division II at the 2003 , 2005 , 2007 , 2008 , 2010 , 2011 , 2012 , 2014 and 2015 World Championships when he was voted best player on his team. After a temporary relegation, he represented his colors in 2006 in Division III, but rose with the team immediately back to Division II. He also represented his colors in qualifying for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang .
