location

Immediately south of Derneck Castle there is another castle site on Kapf or Käpfle , about 330 meters away , Weiler Castle .
history
The castle was built around 1350 by Degenhard von Gundelfingen , a member of the regionally important noble family. In the first construction phase, the shield wall, which is still defining the construction today, was built with a fortified tower integrated to the northwest . In a later expansion phase, the shield wall and tower were expanded into a residential tower-like "stone house".
After the Gundelfinger von Derneck family died out in 1546, the castle had different owners until it was bought by the Fürstenberg family in 1768 . These erected the other buildings that still exist today. In 1828 the castle came to Württemberg . It was used as a forest dwelling until 1965 .
In 1967/1968 extensive repair work and a conversion to a hiking home of the Swabian Alb Association were carried out.
Todays use
The castle is freely accessible and houses a small restaurant ("Burgschänke") and a hiking home of the Swabian Alb Association with 41 overnight stays.
