Player career

The 1.81-meter-tall center began its professional career with its home club ESV Kaufbeuren and played three seasons in the ice hockey Bundesliga for them from 1991 to 1994 . Then Ustorf moved to North America, where he tried to prevail in the National Hockey League with the Washington Capitals , who had elected him 53rd in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft . After a full season with the Portland Pirates farm team in the American Hockey League, the left shooter commuted between the Pirates and the Washington Capitals in the two following seasons. During this time he played 59 NHL games for the capital city.

In 1997 the attacker joined the Berlin Capitals from the DEL, whose trainer and manager at that time was Ustorf's father Peter . After the season Ustorf returned to North America, where he played at various clubs in the International Hockey League .

In 2001 the striker moved back to the DEL and then played for the Adler Mannheim for two seasons . In October 2003, team captain Ustorf and his assistant Yves Racine were dismissed from the Adler's management team, who wanted to react to the Adler's unsuccessful start to the season. For the rest of the season, Stefan Ustorf was in the squad of league rivals Krefeld Pinguine .

From 2004 the attacker played for the Eisbären Berlin , with whom he was able to become German champions in 2005 , 2006 , 2008 , 2009 , 2011 and 2012 and also in 2008 cup winners .

International

Stefan Ustorf was the captain of the German national ice hockey team and played 121 games for them. After the 2006 World Cup , he announced his resignation, but returned to the national team for the 2008 World Cup . On September 2, 2008, the attacker finally resigned from the national team with 128 international matches.

End of career

At the beginning of December 2011, Ustorf suffered a traumatic brain injury after a check in the game against Hanover , which made him fear the end of his career. Fourteen months later, he was still suffering from the consequences and could not do sports.

“I still feel very bad, especially in my head. As a result, I feel how my body is gradually falling apart, [...] I was not aware of how bad my condition can be because I can no longer exercise, no longer be able to keep myself physically fit. "

- Stefan Ustorf : Süddeutsche Zeitung

On March 7, 2013, Ustorf finally announced his official retirement due to the injury. In an interview with the newspaper Neues Deutschland in February 2016, Ustorf reported that years after the end of his playing career he was still suffering from the consequences of the traumatic brain injury he suffered.

On December 28, 2016, an oversized jersey with Ustorf's number 14 was pulled under the ceiling of the polar bear home hall. In order to honor his merits and successes for the club, his number is no longer given by the Berliners.

Functionary career

On May 10, 2014, the Eisbären Berlin announced that Ustorf would take up the post of sporting director in July of the same year. In May 2017, he moved to the post of player development and sighting at the Eisbären. In mid-December 2019, Ustorf and the Berliners separated with immediate effect. Ustorf had previously been informed by the club that his contract, which expired at the end of the 2019/20 season, would not be extended, whereupon Ustorf applied for clearance. Ustorf told the newspaper Der Tagesspiegel that one could not say "that this was done by mutual agreement" and expressed his disappointment.
