Career
Esa Pirnes began his career as an ice hockey player in 1995 at Kärpät Oulu , for which he was active in the second-class I-divisioona for four years . He then moved to the Espoo Blues , for which he played in the SM-liiga until 2001 , before receiving a contract from their league rival Tappara Tampere , with whom he was runner-up in 2002 and Finnish champion for the first time in his career in 2003 . In addition, he received the Jari Kurri trophy as the best player in the playoffs in the 2002/03 championship season due to his performance and was elected to the SM liiga All-Star team. Thereupon the Los Angeles Kings became aware of the center, who selected him in the NHL Entry Draft 2003 in the sixth round as a total of 174 players. In the 2003/04 season , the Finn scored eleven points, including three goals, in 57 games for the Kings in the National Hockey League . Due to the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season , Pirnes returned to his Finnish homeland, where he received a contract with Lukko Rauma , where he played for a season as well as the following season at his ex-club Espoo Blues.
From 2006 to 2008 Pirnes was active for the first time in other European countries when he played for Färjestad BK from the Swedish Elitserien for two years . He then moved to Atlant Mytishchi in the summer of 2008 in the newly founded Continental Hockey League . After a good season with 50 points from 51 KHL games for Atlant Mytishchi, the Finn returned to his homeland for the 2009/10 season and signed a contract with Jokerit . On September 12, 2011 Esa Pirnes signed a four-week contract with EV Zug , which he then extended until the end of the season.
Between May 2012 and February 2014 he worked for AIK Stockholm and was one of the team's best point collectors. He then returned to his hometown club and ended his career in 2016.
