Vladimir "Vlad" Rubes , Czech Vladimír Rubeš , (born September 8, 1970 in Prague , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech - Australian ice hockey player and coach , who in the course of his active career between 2000 and 2018 mostly for the Sydney Bears in the Australian Ice Hockey League . From 2001 to 2016 he was also the team's trainer. Rubes has both Czech and Australian citizenship.

Career

Vlad Rubes, who was born in what was then Czechoslovakia, began his career in the Sunshine Hockey League in the southern United States , where he played for West Palm Beach Blaze and the Daytona Beach Sun Devils . In 1994 he returned to his hometown Prague and played there for IHC Bohemians Prague in the 2nd division , the third highest Czech division. After he had played the 1998/99 season for the Memphis RiverKings in the Central Hockey League , he moved to the Sydney Bears at the turn of the millennium . For the Bears he was active in the Australian Ice Hockey League until autumn 2018, with the exception of 2014, 2015 and 2016, when he paused three seasons . With the team he won the Goodall Cup , the Australian national championship, in 2002 and 2007 , and in 2008 the VIP Cup as the main round winner of the AIHL.

International

For the Australian national team Rubes was on the ice for the first time at the D World Cup in 2000 . After switching to the current division system, he was in his country's squad at the World Championships in Division II in 2001 , 2004 , 2005 , 2006 , 2007 and 2008 . In 2008 he achieved with the "Aussies" by winning the home tournament in Newcastle, the first promotion to Division I, in which he played in 2009 . He then ended his international career.

Coaching

From 2001 Rubes was the player-coach of the Sydney Bears in the Australian Ice Hockey League . From 2014 to 2016 he worked there exclusively as a trainer before he switched sides and laced his ice hockey boots again from 2017.

From 2000 to 2006 he worked for the Australian Association as a coach of the national U18 team, where he was assistant coach until 2002 and then head coach. From 2011 to 2013 he was head coach of the men's national team , where he was promoted to Division I at the 2011 World Cup .
