Hejda in the jersey of the Columbus Blue Jackets

Jan Hejda began his career with HC Slavia Prague in the Czech Extraliga , before he was selected ( drafted ) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft as 106th in the fourth round by the Buffalo Sabers .

First, however, the left-handed player moved to the Russian Super League , where he spent two seasons with HK CSKA Moscow and one season with Chimik Moskowskaya Oblast . In July 2006 Hejda was transferred from the Sabers in exchange for a seven-round draft pick to the Edmonton Oilers , with whom he signed a one-year contract that same week. The defender scored his first NHL goal on January 8, 2007 with the decisive overtime goal against the Los Angeles Kings .

In July 2007 Hejda signed a one-year contract worth one million US dollars with the Columbus Blue Jackets . With a plus / minus statistic of +20 after the first season, he became one of the best defensive players there, so that his contract was extended by three years in April 2008.

After this contract was not renewed, Hejda signed a four-year contract on July 1, 2011 with the Colorado Avalanche . The Czech fulfilled this and was then looking for a new employer. In September 2015, he graduated from the Chicago Blackhawks training camp , but received no contract. Two months later he received a try-out contract with the Lake Erie Monsters and remained without a scorer point for them in eleven games. Then he ended his career.

Hejda now works as a players' agent and lives in Denver with his wife and two children.
