The multi-striped snail cichlid ( Neolamprologus multifasciatus ) or multi is one of the cichlids and lives endemically in Lake Tanganyika in East Africa . It belongs to the so-called snail cichlids and lives in the lake in large fields of empty snail shells of the genus Neothauma , but also breeds in the rubble zone in rock crevices.
The species forms colonies in which the individual members only claim relatively small territories and the young fish work as brood care assistants, i.e. they help defend the territory and take care of their younger siblings. Males reach a size of up to 4 cm, females remain a bit smaller at around 3 cm.
It is a fish that is well suited for aquariums, as it can also be kept in relatively small tanks (preferably from 54 l) and is easy to breed.
Neolamprologus multifasciatus can reach an age of over four years.
