Grusonia aggeria is a species of plant in the genus Grusonia fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The specific epithet aggeria means '(Latin agger) heap, mound of earth, indicates the habit of growing in groups'.

description

Grusonia aggeria grows low and forms groups 3 to 9 centimeters high. The short cylindrical to club-shaped shoot sections are 3.5 to 9 centimeters long and have a diameter of 1.5 to 3 centimeters. The areoles are covered with yellow glochids that are up to 5 millimeters long. The 5 to 15 thorns are usually only on the areoles near the shoot tips and are 3 to 5 centimeters long. Sometimes there is only a single spike. The up to five upper thorns are reddish brown to gray, ascending to spreading, twisting and thickened at their base like an onion. The chalky white lower spines are bent downward, flattened, and twisted or arched.

The light yellow flowers reach lengths of up to 2.5 centimeters. The cylindrical to ellipsoidal fruits are dry and covered with glochids. They are 2 to 2.5 inches or more long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Grusonia aggeria is common in the United States from southeast Texas to central Coahuila in Mexico in the vegetation of the Chihuahua Desert at altitudes of 549 to 1067 meters.

It was first described as Opuntia aggeria in 1990 by Barbara E. Ralston and Richard A. Hilsenbeck . Edward Frederick Anderson placed the species in the genus Grusonia in 1999 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
