Gedion Zelalem (born January 26, 1997 in Berlin ) is a German - American football player who has been under contract with New York City FC since January 2020 .

Career

In the club

youth

Zelalem started playing soccer at the age of five. He grew up in Germany as the son of Ethiopian parents and played for BFC Germania 1888 and Hertha BSC . He moved to the United States with his family in 2007 at the age of nine . He continued his development at MSC United and Bethesda Soccer Club before playing for the club team Olney Rangers. An Arsenal FC scout Daniel Karbassiyoon spotted Zelalem playing for the Olney Rangers during a Dallas Cup game. After contacting his coaches, Zelalem was flown to London for summer training at the Arsenal Youth Academy. After this camp ended, he was offered a permanent place in the academy.

Arsenal FC and loan stations

Zelalem began playing in the U-16 squad at Arsenal and was promoted to the U-21 squad in April 2013. He made his U-21 debut against Liverpool ; Arsenal lost 3-2 at Anfield . A few days later he made his next game in a 3-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers .

In July 2013, Zelalem was nominated to Arsenal's 24-man squad for a trip to Asia . He showed strong performances against Indonesia , Vietnam and Japan . He stayed in the team for the Emirates Cup game against Galatasaray Istanbul on August 4, 2013 (1: 2). Zelalem was on the bench in the second league game of the season, a 3-1 win against Fulham FC on August 24, but was not used. In September 2013, he suffered an injury that left him sidelined for up to two months. He returned for Arsenal's youth team in a UEFA Youth League match at Borussia Dortmund on November 6, 2013. He played the entire game that ended 2-2.

The German made his debut in Arsenal's FA Cup squad on January 24, 2014. He came on the field in the 71st minute in a 4-0 home win over Coventry City as a substitute for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain . Zelalem made his UEFA Champions League debut on 9 December 2014 when he came on as a substitute for Mathieu Flamini in the 4-1 away win over Galatasaray Istanbul .

In August 2015, his loan to the Glasgow Rangers in the Scottish Championship was announced until January 2016 . The loan was later extended until the end of the season. With the Rangers he was promoted to the first division, and he won the Challenge Cup with the team . Zelalem returned to London during the summer break.

Change to the USA

On March 11, 2019, Zelalem moved to Major League Soccer at Sporting Kansas City . He received the franchise from Kansas City , Kansas a contract until the end of the season in 2019 further with an option for two seasons. First, Zelalem played for the farm team , the Swope Park Rangers , in the USL Championship . After 9 MLS appearances and 7 appearances (one goal) for the Swope Park Rangers, Zelalem left the franchise at the end of the season.

For the 2020 season Zelalem moved within the MLS to New York City FC .

In the national team

Zelalem initially trained with the US U-15 team without having a license to play. Instead, between 2012 and 2013 he played twice for the German U-15 national team , eight times for the U-16 selection and once for the U-17 selection . In 2015 Zelalem moved to the American federation and made his debut for the US U-20 team on May 19 in a friendly against Australia . He then took part in the U-20 World Cup in New Zealand . In the 2015 CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the 2016 Summer Olympics , he also played for the US U-23 team .

Personal

Zelalem, who moved to the United States at the age of nine, took American citizenship at the age of 17 in December 2014 . This was made possible because of the Child Citizenship Act , which allows underage descendants of naturalized parents - Zelalem's father was also naturalized in 2014 - to also become US citizens.
