Charles Levin

Charles Herbert Levin (born March 12, 1949 in Chicago , Illinois - † July 2019 near Selma , Oregon ) was an American actor .

He was best known for playing Elliot Novak in the ninth season of the television series Alice and from 1982 to 1986 in the role of Eddie Gregg in the television series Hill Street Police Station .

Life

Levin was born in Chicago. He was a graduate of the Yale University belonging Yale School of Drama in New Haven , Connecticut , he studied at the drama to 1974 and a member of the fraternity Skull and Bones (Engl. "Skull and Bones") was.

In the 1990s he taught acting at the elite US University of Harvard .

On July 8, 2019, Levin was reported missing to the police by his son after his relatives had not heard from him since June 28. At the time Levin was living in Grants Pass in southern Oregon and was moving to a new home in town.

Levin's badly damaged Fiat was discovered on July 12, 2019 on a remote forest road northeast of Selma; inside the vehicle was his dead pug "Boo Bear". A day later, human remains were found near the vehicle in a forest. On July 15, 2019, it was confirmed that the recovered body was Levin. According to the police, Levin's death was not caused by third-party or personal negligence, but was classified as an accident; there is a presumption that he was in a state of emotional emergency. The actor was 70 years old.

Levin was married to actress Katherine De Hetre from 1983 until her death , who was killed in a car accident in Los Angeles on December 29, 2007 . Levin had two sons, Ben and Jesse, and a daughter, Kate.

Career

Levin's first role in the film was a speaking role in the animated film Everybody Ride the Carousel from 1976. He made his Broadway debut in New York City in 1980 as Sid in the musical One Night Stand ; the season at the Nederlander Theater included a total of eight previews.

In addition to his work for the theater , he has had numerous guest roles in film and television productions, including Familienbande , Tales from the Darkside , The Twilight Zone , The Facts of Life , Falcon Crest (as Arthur Haberman), Punky Brewster (as Officer Bob) , The Prime Years , Harry's Miraculous Criminal Court , LA Law - Star Attorneys, Tricks, Litigation (as Robert Caporale), Designing Women , Murphy Brown , Capital News (as Vinnie DiSalvo), New York Cops - NYPD Blue and Law & Order .

He was best known for portraying mohel in the Seinfeld episode The Circumcision and as the gay chef Coco in the pilot episode of The Golden Girls . Levin was originally supposed to be part of the main cast of the television series, but Estelle Getty's portrayal of Sophia Petrillo was so well received by the audience that he was eventually replaced by her. The screenwriters liked Levin and his embodiment of the cook, but had concerns about developing five characters over the course of the series.

Between 1989 and 1992 he played again on Broadway in the musical City of Angels ; he played Irwin S. Irving and Buddy Fidler as the understudy of René Auberjonois .

In 1995 and 1996 he played the role of Pa Ubu on the stage of the Loeb Drama Center at the University of Cambridge in the musical Ubu Rock , an American Repertory Theater (ART) production based on the play King Ubu. He also had roles in the Pulitzer - Award- winning play Buried Child by Sam Shepard , in Punch and Judy Get Divorced , in Shlemiel the First (1997), in the revival of Six People Looking for an Author (1996), in the theatrical interpretation of Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (based on the silent film of the same name ), in Carlo Gozzi's The King Stag and A Gozzi Surprise (based on Gozzi's work König Hirsch ), in The Oresteia: Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, The Eumenides , in William Shakespeare's The Tempest , in the Threepenny Opera as well as in Woyzeck .
