Selma one is unincorporated (Engl. Unincorporated community ) and one from the United States Census Bureau to defined statistical purposes settlement area (CDP) in Josephine County of the US state of Oregon in the United States .

According to the US census in 2010, it had 330 households and a population of 695 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 41.5 inhabitants / km²; in 2000 there were 1,934 inhabitants.

Selma is located southwest of central Josephine County in the valley of Deer Creek, a westward-flowing tributary of the Illinois River and part of the Rogue River watershed . US Route 199 runs through the city center and runs eight miles south to Cave Junction and 20 miles northeast to the county seat of Grants Pass . Lake Selmac is about three miles to the southeast and Eight Dollar Mountain is to the southwest; it is part of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest and is considered one of the most important botanical sites in Oregon and is a major area of species endemism in the state.

Economy and Infrastructure

The Siskiyou Field Institute (formerly Deer Creek Center) is engaged in the exploration of the Klamath - Siskiyou - ecoregion Area, a mile west of Selma; it was a partner institute of Southern Oregon University from 2004 to 2014 .

Personalities

Actor John Wayne got to know the area around Selma while filming along the Rogue River for the movie With Dynamite and Pious Sayings . He regularly visited a friend's ranch , Deer Creek Ranch a mile west of Selma, and kept some of his horses there. Today the Siskiyou Field Institute (SFI) is located there.

Country music singer Kristy Lee Cook, who was born in 1984 and finished seventh in the seventh season of American Idol , also comes from Selma . In July 2019, the Chicago- born actor Charles Levin (1949-2019) died in a wooded area northeast of the village; he lived in Grant's Pass until his death.
