Rachelle Ranae "Shelley" Shannon (* 1956 ) is a militant activist of the Christian fundamentalist anti-abortion movement from Grants Pass , Oregon . She tried to assassinate abortion doctor George Tiller on August 19, 1993 and shot him in both arms in front of his abortion clinic in Wichita, Kansas .

She was serving a serving sentence in FCI Waseca Federal Prison in Minnesota and was released from prison in 2018.

Attempted murder of George Tiller

On August 19, 1993, Shannon shot George Tiller in both arms.

The motive for this act was her engagement in the radical Christian anti-abortion movement. At the time of the deed, Shelley had been involved in this movement for five years and had been influenced accordingly. She had written pamphlets in which she expressed her solidarity with Michael F. Griffin, the killer of the abortion doctor David Gunn. Griffin is "the awesomest, greatest hero of our time" (Eng .: "the most wonderful, greatest hero of our time"). Tiller's clinic in Wichita was a frequent demonstration site for abortion opponents and advocates. Shannon had mingled with abortion advocates and shot Tiller with a semi-automatic pistol. Tiller was murdered 16 years later by Scott Roeder.

Negotiation and judgment

Shannon testified that the attempt to kill Tiller was not morally reprehensible.

The jury deliberated for an hour. Shannon was found guilty of attempted murder. She was sentenced to 11 years in prison.

While in prison in Lansing , Kansas, she signed a statement from the Army of God terrorist group in solidarity with killer Paul Jennings Hill . Hill had murdered abortion doctor John Britton and his bodyguard James Barrett in 1994. On June 4, 1995, she pleaded guilty to starting fires at multiple abortion clinics in Oregon , California , Idaho, and Nevada .

She has been found guilty in federal court on 30 cases, including arson and tax offenses.

On September 9, 1995, Judge James A. Redden sentenced her to twenty years in prison. The judge called her a terrorist . The twenty years were added to the eleven years for the attempted murder of Tiller.

Their daughter Angela Shannon (probably born 1974) was prosecuted for sending death threats to Milwaukee abortion doctor George Woodward in 1993. Rachelle Shannon tried to take responsibility for the threatening letters, but Angela was found fingerprinted and sentenced to 46 months in prison.

In 1998 Shelley Shannon sued Kansas Prison regarding the sewer system. This is defective and would endanger the health conditions of the inmates. The lawsuit was dismissed in several instances.
