George Richard Tiller (born August 8, 1941 in Wichita , Kansas , † May 31, 2009 there ) was an American doctor . He gained fame in his home country through late abortions he carried out . He died from an assassination attempt by an anti- abortionist .

Life

The clinic in Wichita, where Tiller was medical director , specializes in abortions and one of only three clinics in the US that perform abortions after the 21st week of pregnancy. Tiller has been performing abortions since 1973. He and his clinic have been the target of attacks and demonstrations by anti-abortionists several times . In 1993, for example, Rachelle Shannon , who is close to the terrorist group Army of God , shot him in both arms, and in 1985 an explosive device exploded in his hospital.

The O'Reilly Factor

About the person Tiller was discussed on the talk show The O'Reilly Factor of the right host Bill O'Reilly on February 25, 2005 for the first time. Before he was murdered, he was the subject of this program 28 times. Among other things, he was defamed as "Tiller, the Baby Killer" (German: Tiller, the baby killer). Moderator Bill O'Reilly did not protest against this designation. Congressman Robert K. Dornan had also used this term in the anteroom of Congress. O'Reilly said he "doesn't want to be Tiller on Judgment Day".

Trial against Tiller

Tiller was charged in March 2009 in Kansas for failing to consult a second doctor in 19 cases, which is required by Kansas State law.

The trial became a cause célèbre , a case of national concern. The columnist Jack Cashill compared the trial with the war crimes tribunal in Nuremberg. Jacob M. Appel , professor at New York University , described Tiller as a hero who "stands in the pantheon of defense of freedom" alongside Susan B. Anthony and Martin Luther King Jr.

On March 27, 2009, Tiller was acquitted on all charges.

assassination

On Pentecost Sunday 2009, May 31st, he was shot while attending church. This made him the fourth abortion doctor to be murdered in the United States since 1993 . The perpetrator had shot him in the eye from close range and threatened people who wanted to rush to help Tiller. The militant anti-abortion opponent Scott P. Roeder was arrested as a suspect three hours after the attack.

Reactions to the Assassination

Tiller's murder was widely condemned, both by anti-abortionists and abortionists. President Barack Obama said he was angry and shocked. David N. O'Steen, director of the National Right to Life Committee , said he condemned such acts of violence.

Abortion opponent Randall Terry described Tiller as a mass murderer and radio preacher and former vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention Wiley Drake said he was glad Tiller was dead.

Right-wing commentators like Michelle Malkin were outraged that the sympathy for Tiller’s death was absurdly disproportionate compared to other bereavements. For example, the day after Tiller was assassinated, two US soldiers were attacked in Little Rock , Arkansas. One died and the other was wounded. Michelle Malkin wrote:

“Tiller's suspected murderer, Scott Roeder, was white, Christian, anti-government, and anti-abortion. The gunman in the military recruiting center attack, Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad, was black, a Muslim convert, anti-military, and anti-American. Both crimes are despicable, cowardly acts of domestic terrorism. But the disparate treatment of the two brutal cases by both the White House and the media is striking. "
“Tiller's alleged murderer, Scott Roeder, was white, Christian, anti-government and anti-abortion. The assassin in Little Rock, Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad, was black, Muslim, anti-militarist and anti-American. Both crimes are despicable, cowardly acts of domestic terrorism. But the different treatment of both cases by the press and the White House is remarkable. "

James Taranto of The Wall Street Journal responded to this allegation, writing:

“In the hierarchy of public awareness, attacks are higher than hate crimes and hate crimes are higher than ordinary murders. The assassination of Martin Luther King received more attention and is a more important part of our history than an ordinary lynching, even if both are horrific crimes for the same motivation. "

Another response to Malkin's accusation was to downplay the fact that Tiller's killer was a Christian, while the mass media pounced on the fact that Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad was a Muslim.

Most of the anti-abortion opponents stayed away from Tiller's funeral. Members of the Westboro Baptist Church gathered at the cemetery fence holding up signs reading "God Sent Sagittarius," "Abortion Is Bloody Murder," and "Baby Killer In Hell."

Condemnation of Roeder

Roeder confessed to the act shortly after the arrest, but did not plead guilty as the act was justified in his eyes. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2010 .
