Charles Gabriel

Charles A. Gabriel (born January 21, 1928 in Lincoln , North Carolina , † September 4, 2003 ) was an American general in the US Air Force and from July 1, 1982 to June 30, 1986 the 11th Chief of Staff of the Air Force .

Military career

Training and Korean War

In 1948 Gabriel entered military service and first graduated from the US Military Academy in West Point , which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1950 . After that served as a staff officer at Gabriel Chief of Staff Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe of NATO in Mons , Belgium .

Vietnam War and General Staff Officer

In July 1970 Gabriel completed a fighter pilot training course and shortly thereafter became the commander of the 432nd Tactical Air Reconnaissance Squadron at Udon Thani Air Base in Thailand . As commander, he himself flew 152 combat missions in F-4 fighters . In July 1972, he returned to the US Air Force Headquarters and became Deputy Director of Operations. From February 1975 to August 1977 he was deputy chief of staff for operations at the headquarters of the Tactical Air Command at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia . He then became Deputy Commander in Chief of the US Forces and United Nations Armed Forces in South Korea . In April 1979, he moved back to the US Air Force Headquarters, where he assumed the role of Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Planning and Readiness.

Promotion to general and retirement

On August 1, 1980, he was promoted to general and after 28 years returned to Germany, where he became Commanding General of the United States Air Forces in Europe and at the same time commander of the Allied Air Forces in Central Europe ( AAFCE ) at Ramstein Air Base . His deputy during this time was the German Lieutenant General Eberhard Eimler . In June 1982, he was the successor of General Lew Allen, Jr. for the 11th Chief of Staff of the Air Force appointed.

On June 30, 1986, Gabriel was replaced by Larry D. Welch and retired. Gabriel completed more than 4,200 flight hours in the course of his military career.
