William Shelton (2012)

William Lee Shelton (born February 25, 1954 in Tulsa , Oklahoma ) is a former general in the United States Air Force (USAF). From January 5, 2011 to August 15, 2014, he was in command of Air Force Space Command (AFSPC), a major command of the U.S. Air Force based on Peterson Air Force Base , Colorado .

Previously, from July 2009, he served as Assistant Vice Chief of Staff and Director, Air Staff for the USAF at the Department of Defense , Washington, DC

Education and career

Shelton was born in 1954 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, attended Moore High School , and joined the USAF in 1976 after graduating from the United States Air Force Academy , where he earned a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering .

Shelton's other training includes Masters degrees in Aerospace Engineering ( Air Force Institute of Technology , 1980) and National Security Strategy ( National War College , 1995).

Service in the rank of general

From November 2000 Shelton served as Director of Requirements at the headquarters of Air Force Space Command, Colorado, from January 2001 in the rank of Brigadier General . Between 2002 and 2003 he worked there as Director of Plans and Programs and Director, Air and Space Operations , before moving to the US in June 2003, first as Director of Capability and Resource Integration (J8) , then as Director of Plans and Policy (J5) Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) was transferred to Offutt Air Force Base , Nebraska , and was promoted to major general in that capacity in July 2004 .

After nearly a year of service as Commander, Joint Space Operations - also in USSTRATCOM, but on the Vandenberg Air Force Base , California - took Shelton mid-2005, ibid command of the 14th Air Force and the Joint Functional Component Command for Space , which he, in Appointed lieutenant general December 2007 , held until 2008. Before taking up his position at AFSPC, Shelton was Chief of Warfighting Integration and Chief Information Officer on the Secretary of the Air Force's staff from December 2008 and most recently Assistant Vice Chief of Staff and Director, Air Staff of the USAF at the Pentagon.

On September 10, 2010, US President Barack Obama nominated Shelton to succeed General Robert Kehler , who in turn assumed command of the US Strategic Command, as commander of the AFSPC. Shelton took command on January 5 of the following year, his promotion to general took place as part of the transfer of command.

On August 15, 2014, he passed command of the AFSPC to General John E. Hyten .
