Robert Tralles Herres (born January 12, 1932 in Denver , Colorado , † July 24, 2008 ) was an American general in the US Air Force , Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and manager .

biography

After attending East High School in Denver, he studied at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis , where he received a Bachelor of Science (BS) in 1954 . He then joined the Air Force and completed postgraduate studies in electrical engineering at the Air Force Institute of Technology , which he completed in 1960 with a Master of Science ( MS Electrical Engineering ). He completed another postgraduate course in public administration at George Washington University in 1965 with a Master of Public Administration (MPA). In the same year he was also a graduate of Air Command and Staff College . Finally, he graduated from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1971 . At times he was commanding general of the 8th US Air Force .

On July 30, 1984, he was appointed General Commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and held this position as Commander of the North American Air and Space Defense Command until February 5, 1987. He was also Commander from 1985 to 1987 of the US Space Command . He then became the first Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on February 6, 1987 , and held this post until his retirement on February 28, 1990.

Herres then switched to the private sector and in 1990 became President of the USAA's real estate and accident company , the insurance company for members of the US Army and their family members. He was then Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of USAA from 1993 to 2000 and also Chairman of the USAA between 1993 and 2002 and a board member of Luby's, Inc. from 2000 to 2004 .

Robert T. Herres was also involved socio-political and was not only a curator ( trustee ) of Trinity University in San Antonio , but also member of the National Board of the Scout Association Boy Scouts of America .
