The United Services Automobile Association (USAA) is a San Antonio- based diversified financial services company . The company provides insurance and banking and financial services primarily aimed at members of the United States Armed Forces and their families. At the end of 2017 there were 12.4 million members. USAA was founded in San Antonio in 1922 by a group of 25 United States Army officers as a mutual auto insurance mechanism called the United States Army Automobile Association when they were unable to get auto insurance based on the assumption that as military officers they were a high risk group . The USAA has expanded since then. The organization began offering homeowner and life insurance in the 1960s, brokerage and investment management services in the 1970s, and banking services in the 1980s.

In addition to its headquarters in San Antonio and several branches in the United States, the company also has offices in London and Frankfurt am Main .
