Paul J. Selva
Paul Joseph Selva (born September 27, 1958 in Biloxi , Mississippi ) is an American military pilot and general of the United States Air Force (USAF) and has been Deputy Chairman of the General Staff of the United States' Armed Forces since July 31, 2015 . Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, VJCS ). Selva is the tenth officer in this position since it was introduced in 1986 and is nominally the highest-ranking soldier in the US armed forces after the Chairman of the United General Staff.
As of May 5, 2014, Selva was Commander-in-Chief of the US Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), a cross- armed forces functional command headquartered at Scott Air Force Base , Illinois . Previously, from November 2012 onwards, he commanded the Air Mobility Command (AMC) there, a main command of the USAF subordinate to USTRANSCOM .
Education and career
Selva joined the Air Force in 1980 after graduating from the US Air Force Academy , where he earned a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering .
As a pilot Selva occurred during his career on over 3100 hours of flight time on the patterns T-37 , C-5 , C-17A , C-141B , KC-10 and KC-135A . His further education includes Masters degrees in Management and Human Relations ( Abilene Christian University , 1984) and Political Science ( Auburn University , 1992).
Service in the rank of general
From June 2003 onwards, Selva headed the Tanker Airlift Control Center at Scott Airforce Base and was promoted to Brigadier General on January 1, 2004 . Between November 2004 and July 2006 he served there as Director of Operations and Logistics at USTRANSCOM, then as Director, Air Force Strategic Planning and Deputy Chief of Staff for Strategic Plans and Programs at the USAF headquarters in Washington, DC , from June 2007 under promotion in addition to major general responsible for the Air Force Quadrennial Defense Review under the responsibility of the Vice Chairman of the USAF General Staff .
From October 2008 onwards, Selva served with the rank of lieutenant general as adjutant to the chairman of the United Joint Chiefs of Staff , Washington, DC, and from October 2011 onward, he served as deputy commander of the Pacific Air Forces at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam , Hawaii .
Associated with the promotion to general, Selva assumed command of Air Mobility Command on November 30, 2012, where he met Raymond E. Johns Jr. who in turn retired. On February 7, 2014, the Department of Defense finally nominated Selvas to succeed William M. Fraser III. known as the commander in chief of USTRANSCOM. The Senate confirmed the change on April 8, and Selva finally took over the command on May 5.
On July 31, 2015, Selva succeeded Admiral James A. Winnefeld , who in turn was retiring, as Vice Chairman of the United Joint Chiefs of Staff.
