The United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM; German Transport Command of the United States ) is one of the eleven cross -armed forces Unified Combatant Commands of the US armed forces and ensures the worldwide transport of troops by sea, land and air. The headquarters are located at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois .
history
The Second World War , the Korean and Vietnam War , but also the Berlin blockade from 1948 to 1949 had shown the United States the need for a well-functioning transport system for national security and cooperation with the Allies. In 1978 , during Exercise Nifty Nugget, major flaws in the coordination between the military and civilian participants were identified. As a result, two changes were made to the logistics system. From then on, all transport units were subordinate to the Joint Chiefs of Staff and were to be coordinated jointly by a command. Shortly thereafter, the Joint Deployment Agency (JDA) was created and set up at MacDill Air Force Base ( Florida ).
Despite many successes, the JDA was unable to fully carry out its mandate. Although she was entrusted with the coordination of the transport services, she lacked the ability to implement and enforce the necessary changes. After independent studies, then on April 18, 1987, then President Ronald Reagan ordered the Ministry of Defense to set up a new high command for troop transports. With the Goldwater-Nichols Act , a law to reorganize the military chain of command, the Unified Transportation Command (UTC) was established, which later became the United States Transportation Command .
