Ambrose "Rowdy" Gaines (born February 17, 1959 ) is a former American swimmer .

At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles he was Olympic champion over 100 m freestyle and with the relay over 4 × 100 m (freestyle and medley) of the USA. This made him one of the best swimmers at these Olympic Games alongside Michael Groß . After his career as a swimmer, he became a co-commentator on the radio and television station NBC . In 1995 he was inducted into the international swimming pool 's hall of fame .
