The place is known for its sandy beach, Praia da Bafureira . It is popular with the residents of the greater Lisbon area as a destination for excursions and bathing, as a result of which a number of beach bars and nightspots have settled along the pedestrian zone on the beach. National and international surfing competitions also take place here.

Its upstream rock tip, the small cape Pedra do Sal ( Portuguese for: salt stone), is designated as a national biosphere protection zone. With the Centro de Interpretação Ambiental da Pedra do Sal (CIAPS), a museum and visitor center has been set up here, in which event rooms, exhibition halls and restaurants are also set up for the diverse activities of the center. On the eastern steep slope of the cliff, two Neolithic - Copper Age dome tombs were discovered and excavated in 1944 . The protected area was a reason to lead the European long-distance hiking trail E9 (here also the Portuguese hiking trail GR-11) here.

With the Clube de Petanca de São Pedro do Estoril founded in 1997, a pétanque club is active in the town.
