List of train stations in Portugal |
The Sintra train station is the larger of the two stations of the Portuguese town of Sintra . It is the end point of the Linha de Sintra .
history
The trains first reached Sintra in 1887 when the station opened under the name Sintra Vila . However, they ended in Lisbon at the Alcântara-Terra train station, which is far outside the city center . The line to the much more centrally located Rossio train station was finally inaugurated in 1891. In 1954 the station was given its current name. In 1956 the line was electrified.
Until 1954, the tram to Praia das Maçãs , which still runs in summer, started at the train station; today, however, it is around 400 meters away.
Today the Sintra train station is not only of touristic importance, but also the starting point of the most frequented suburban line in Lisbon.
architecture
The station has three tracks. It comprises a middle and a side platform, with the side platform on the right-hand side (as seen from the direction of Lisbon). A fourth track has no platform connection and only serves as a siding. The station building of the terminus is on the side.
business
Every 15 minutes, suburban trains of the CP Urbanos de Lisboa run from the station to Lisbon Rossio station. Since the timetable change in 2011, trains to Alverca on the North Tejo have also been running from Sintra during rush hour, stopping at the important Lisbon train stations of Sete Rios , Entrecampos and Oriente . Both relations belong to the Linha de Sintra line family.
