Pennsylvania State Route 415 , listed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) as State Route 0415 , is a ten miles long highway in Luzerne County and Wyoming County , Pennsylvania . The southern end of the route is at the junction with Pennsylvania State Route 309 in Dallas and in the north Route 415 ends on Pennsylvania State Route 29 at Harveys Lake in the village of Ruggles. A special feature of this road connection is the separation of the right of way in the village of Shawanese , where the road as State Route 0415 follows the west bank of Harveys Lake, while State Route 1415 leads north on the east bank of the lake . North of the lake, the two state routes reunite. The road on the east bank of Harveys Lake was designated Pennsylvania Route 515 in 1928 . In 1946 Route 515 was repealed and Route 415 was shortened on the new Route 29 in Ruggles. Both branches were then signposted as Route 415, in 1990 the east route was added to the street directory as State Route 1415.

Route description

From Dallas Township to Harveys Lake

PA 415 at the eastern terminus of PA 118 in Dallas Township

Route 415 begins at the intersection with Pennsylvania State Route 309 (Tunkahannock Highway) in Dallas Township . The route leads westward through the town as a Memorial Highway, with residential buildings on the south side of the street and commercial buildings on the north side of the street. The route leads in a long arc past a few hotels to a five-way junction with Lake, Church and Main Street. After the junction, Route 415 leads northwest through a densely built-up area with a few farms and the Dallas Township construction yard. After the route passes a large factory, it enters a less densely populated area with farmland and industrial buildings.

A little further in Dallas Township, Route 415 becomes a separate country road and intersects Pennsylvania State Route 118 near Chapel Hill Memorial Park. The highway runs parallel to the south edge of the park through an affluent town, past power lines and a dealer for recreational vehicles. At the junction with Briar Crest Road, Route 415 reaches the small town of Idetown , which the road only briefly crosses. The route then continues northwards to Shawanese , a settlement on the edge of Harveys Lake . There Route 415 leads to the junction of the Lakeside Drive numbered State Route 1415, where Route 415's right of way splits into two country roads.

Division at Harveys Lake

State Route 0415 (West Bank)

Route 415 splits at Harveys Lake and runs along both banks of the lake. As State Route 0415 (Traffic Route 415), the route runs along the western bank and passes through a small town on the western side of the water. The route crosses a small extension of the lake and winds its way westwards past some houses away from the road along the wooded shore of the lake. At the junction with Outlet Road, it turns northeast at a hairpin bend after crossing the outflow of the lake and follows the shore of the lake again.

On the way north, several local roads branch off from Lakeside Drive, which completely circles the lake. Route 0415 follows the bank as a two-lane road again for several kilometers. From the junction with Anderson Road, Route 0415 leads to the southwest, follows the bank in a further change of direction, first again to the north and finally to the northeast, past a park with a beach into the Laketon settlement . Route 0415 runs along the north shore of the lake to the junction with the north end of State Route 1415, from where State Route 415 heads north on Noxen Road.

State Route 1415 (east bank)

Route 1415 on the lakeshore

In the village of Shawanese, from where Route 415 runs along the western shore of the lake, State Route 1415 turns to the eastern shore of the lake. The road leads north through affluent towns. Like the sister route on the west bank, route 1415 also runs through densely populated areas and connects several spur roads to the lake shore. The route winds along the hammer-shaped shoreline of Harveys Lake. After the intersection with Carrie Street, Route 1415 reaches a hairpin bend at the easternmost point of the lake, passes various tennis courts, and crosses several local roads. It heads west on Lakeside Drive to the village of Harveys Lake, which is on the north side of the lake. The route then passes scattered houses on the lake and finally meets Route 0415 in Harveys Lake.

Northern section

After the two branches join, Route 415 heads north as Nioxen Road. It runs through a less densely built-up area of Harveys Lake, through fields and orchards and on through a rural area of Lucerne County into Wyoming County . Eventually the orchards end and Route 415 reaches the junction with Pennsylvania Route 29 (Lake Road) in Ruggles, where Route 415 designation ends and right of way continues as Route 29.

history

Route 415 was originally established in 1928 when most of the state routes in Pennsylvania were numbered. Route 415 began on Pennsylvania State Route 115 (the former Pennsylvania State Route 15 ) in the village of Kyttle and led south to what was then Pennsylvania State Route 92 . The course of the road on the east bank of the lake was defined as Traffic Route 515. In 1932, construction of Route 415 from Mooretown Road to the border of Lucerne and Wyoming Counties was completed. The part of today's Route 29 followed in 1934. This fixed route only existed for twelve years, then the Pennsylvania Department of Highways dissolved Route 515 and shortened Route 415 north of the junction with Route 29 in Ruggles. The road was numbered Route 415 on either side of the lake, but around 1990 the branch on the east bank was named State Route 1415.
