Alverca is a Portuguese municipality ( freguesia ) and city ( Cidade ) in the district of Vila Franca de Xira . The community is 19.4 km² and has 31,063 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). For about two decades, Alverca has been developing into a suburb of Lisbon due to its favorable location on the Linha do Norte railway line and is now part of the capital's suburb .

Alverca was declared a city on August 9, 1990.

In Alverca there is a famous aviation museum, an old church from 1687 and a new church called Igreja dos Pastorinhos from the 21st century. This church is known for its carillon. At the Aviation Museum, one of two branches of the Força Aérea Portuguesa (FAP) Museum in Sintra, there is a former military airfield, one of the oldest in Portugal, but which is no longer used as such. Nonetheless, non-flying units of the FAP still used part of the site. The state aviation company OGMA also has a plant here; repairs are also carried out on aircraft on the premises of the Alverca military airfield .

The town of A-dos-Melros belongs to the city .
