The Alverca military airfield is located around 20 kilometers northeast of the Portuguese capital Lisbon , southeast of the municipality of Alverca , on the banks of the Tagus .
history
The military base was opened in 1919 and was the first airfield and location of the "Grupo Independente de Aviação de Bombardeamento" (GIAB). Since 1950 it has had the official military designation "Base Aérea Nº 8". Until the opening of the Lisbon-Portela airport in 1942, it was the only airfield in the Lisbon area that was used for scheduled flights; at that time it was known under the name "Campo Internacional de Aterragem".
The airfield is still the factory airfield of the company "Indústria Aeronáutica de Portugal, SA" (OGMA) founded in 1918, a manufacturer and maintenance company of aviation components. OGMA built the first hangar there in 1926 and today operates a service center for civil and military aircraft from Embraer , Lockheed and Eurocopter as well as Rolls-Royce engines .
The airfield complies with the requirements of ICAO Annex 14 and NATO standards and has a Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) and High Intensity Runway Lights (HIRL).
The Air Force Museum "Museu do Ar - Pólo Alverca" is located at the airfield. Another museum of the Força Aérea Portuguesa (FAP) is located in Sintra .
