Martim Moniz - until 1998 Socorro - is a subway station of the Linha Verde of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital. The station is located under the square of the same name ( Praça Martim Moniz ) in the municipality of Santa Maria Maior . The neighboring stations of the train station are Rossio and Intendente . The station went into operation on September 28, 1966.

history

After the basic network of the Lisbon metro had been completed by 1963 in the form of a Ypsilon with two lines to Entre Campos and Sete Rios , construction work began on an extension of the line from the Restauradores station in the direction of Alvalade , where a new business center was located, especially after the Second World War developed. For this reason, the southern branch, to which the two northern branches joined, should be extended to the north by means of a large curve. This happened in three stages, first of all, Restauradores - Rossio was opened on January 27, 1963. The stage Rossio - Anjos (September 28, 1966) followed three years later, followed by the Anjos - Alvalade stage (June 18, 1972) in 1972.

On September 28, 1966, among other things, in addition to Intendente and Anjos , the Socorro underground station was opened . All three stations are very similar in terms of their architecture, as all were designed by the architect Dinis Gomes . The station has a relatively flat, rounded platform hall with two 70-meter-long side platforms, whose shape is reminiscent of the first metro stations in Paris. As with all the first Lisbon subway stations, the artist Maria Keil was responsible for the artistic design . For the Socorro train station, she chose tiles with circles and vertical stripes in strong shades of yellow and green.

In the course of a major renaming campaign in 1998, the station was given a new name. The name of the neighboring Freguesia ( Socorro ) was replaced by Martim Moniz . It is the name of the square under which it is located. Martim Moniz is a legendary figure who is said to have participated in the reconquest of the city of Lisbon and the expulsion of the Moors .

As part of the expansion plan for the Lisbon metro until 1999 ( Plano de Expansão da Rede 1999 ), the renovation of the station was due, which began in 1996 and was completed on May 10, 1997. The architect Paulo Brito da Silva was responsible for the renovation itself , for the artistic redesign the Metropolitano de Lisboa, EP selected the artists Gracinda Candeias and José João Brito . Candeias chose different motifs (Portugal, Arabia, Africa) of multiculturalism for the mezzanine floors and would like to remind of the original meaning of the neighboring Mouraria. Brito, in turn, chose light stone in yellow-brown tones for the platform walls and designed several sculptures in the form of knights and bishops, which here particularly refer to the legend of Martim Moniz.

To this day, the station has no elevators and is therefore not barrier-free. Retrofitting is also planned for the medium to long term, as the operating company is primarily concentrating on expanding the subway network.
