Alvalade is a metro station on the Linha Verde of the Lisbon Metro , the subway network of the Portuguese capital . The train station is located in the Lisbon municipality of Alvalade below Praça de Alvalade . The neighboring train stations are Campo Grande and Roma . The station went into operation on June 18, 1972.

history

The opening of the Alvalade subway station in connection with the construction of the Anjos - Alvalade line marked the end of the so-called 2nd expansion stage of the Lisbon metro network. With this, the basic structure of the network was made up of a line with two branches to Sete Rios and Entre Campos Completed within thirteen years (1959 to 1972). Simultaneously with the opening of the line, the city administration or the Carris shut down the parallel tram line .

The opening of the Alvalade station took place on June 18, 1972. The station is based on a design by the Portuguese architect Dinis Gomes , who designed a central platform and a side platform instead of the usual two side platforms, as this was designed as a long-term end point at that time. With regard to the length of the platforms, the previous experience was reflected and built from the start with a length of 70 meters and therefore suitable for four-car trains. Maria Keil , who was responsible for almost all of the first Lisbon metro stations, was responsible for the artistic design of this station . For Alvalade , she selected various lily motifs with white and purple colors on a brown background, which she captured on the tried and tested azulejos .

For 21 years, Alvalade also remained the terminus of the Lisbon metro network in the northeast. It was not until the expansion plan for the Lisbon metro that was adopted in 1990 ( Plano de Expansão da Rede 1999 ) that it was certain that this would not last long. As early as 1993, the Metropolitano de Lisboa, EP extended the route from Alvalade by one station to the major transport hub Campo Grande , where the new Calvanas workshop was built.

Between 1995 and 1998, the separation of the Colégio Militar / Luz - Restauradores and Campo Grande - Rossio branches resulted in the blue ( Linha Azul ) and the green ( Linha Verde ) line. Thus, the green line took over the traffic on the Campo Grande - Alvalade - Rossio route and from 1998 to Baixa-Chiado and Cais do Sodré .

While almost all of the other 40-meter-long platforms on the Lisbon metro were extended to 105 meters in the 1970s and 1980s, stations on the route between Alvalade and Rossio initially stayed at the previous 70 meters. With the increasing number of passengers and also in order to better bring the football fans to the newly opened stadium of the football club Sporting Lisbon at the Campo Grande train station , the operating company decided to extend the platforms of the train stations along the Linha Verde to 105 meters in connection with a general renovation to be able to use six-car trains there. The renovation of the Alvalade station took place in 2007/2008, whereby the platform walls were redesigned in addition to the platform lengthening and renovation in general. The artist Bela Silva chose the themes of animals and women for the redesign and brought numerous monkeys, owls and various female figures to the platform walls. In connection with the renovation, the station also received three elevators, each from the two platforms to the middle floor and from the middle floor to street level.
