The Largo do Chiado is a square in the center of the Portuguese capital Lisbon . It is one of the central squares of the Chiado district . He is the link between the Rua Garrett and Praça Luís de Camões ago and is located in the municipalities of Mercy and Santa Maria Maior .

history

On the west side of today's square were the towers of the Portas de Santa Catarina of the Fernandina city fortifications ( Cerca Fernandina ), which were built between 1373 and 1375. After its demolition between 1705 and 1707, the square was laid out in its current form.

For a long time it was generally referred to as Largo das Duas Igrejas , after the two churches Loreto and Encarnação , which were built on the north and south sides of the square. From 1771 to 1853 there was Chafariz do Loreto , which was connected to the Aqueduto das Águas Livres via the Galeria do Loreto . It was adorned with a statue of Neptune , which today stands in the center of Largo de Dona Estefânia .

By decision of the Câmara Municipal of Lisbon, the square was given its current name on May 19, 1925. In 1929 a monument to the poet António Ribeiro (1520–1591), commonly known as "Chiado" , was erected on the west side of the square .

In terms of traffic, the square is accessible through the Baixa-Chiado subway station , the western exit of which is on the square and to which four escalators lead 45 meters down.
