The Rua Garrett is a street in the center of the Portuguese capital Lisbon . It leads from the Armazéns do Chiado at the intersection of Rua do Carmo and Rua Nova do Almada 210 meters in a westerly direction uphill to Largo do Chiado .
Alongside Largo do Chiado, the street forms the center of the Chiado district and, in the vicinity of the opera ( Teatro Nacional de São Carlos ) and the Teatro São Luiz and the Teatro da Trindade, developed into the intellectual center of the city in the 20th century. The city's most famous bookshops are located here, including Livraria Bertrand, the oldest bookstore in the world, founded in 1732 . At times this was the seat of the literary association Grémio Literário . Café A Brasileira , which opened in 1905, became a meeting point for artists. More recently the street has taken on the character of an elegant shopping street. As the successor to the first church in Lisbon, the Basílica de Nossa Senhora dos Mártires stands in the street.
Originally the street was named Rua do Chiado and Rua das Portas de Santa Catarina . With a view to the commemorations on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the death of the poet Almeida Garrett (1799-1854) he was renamed to the uniform name Rua Garrett by resolution of the city council of June 14, 1880 .
