The Rua do Carmo is a street in the center of the Portuguese capital Lisbon . It leads from the intersection of Rua Garrett and Rua Nova do Almada about 200 meters northwards downhill to Rossio ( Praça de D. Pedro IV ).
description
The street, originally Rua Nova do Carmo , is named after the Carmelite convent located above the street and largely destroyed in the 1755 earthquake . Its name, which is valid today, was given by a resolution of the Câmara Municipal of Lisbon on May 18, 1889.
It is one of the central streets of the Chiado and of great commercial importance. In addition to long-established merchants, there are branches of international retail chains. The footbridge of the Elevador de Santa Justa crosses the street. After the fire in Chiado on August 25, 1988, in which several buildings from the 18th century were destroyed, it began to decline. In the 1990s, under architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, the reconstruction of the district was pushed ahead, which was completed with the reopening of the Armazéns do Chiado .
