The Wexford Festival Opera ( Festival Opera Wexford) is an opera festival specializing primarily in rarities in the southeast Irish city of Wexford . The operas performed in Wexford include many unknown works by famous composers (e.g. Verdi's Aroldo ) and settings of famous operatic materials from the standard repertoire by other composers (e.g. Gazzaniga's Don Giovanni ).

history

Development of the festival under Tom Walsh (1951–1966)

The origins of the opera festival can be traced back to Sir Compton Mackenzie's visit to Ireland in November 1950. Mackenzie was the founder of The Gramophone magazine and a very well-read music writer who lectured to those interested in Wexford Opera. Mackenzie suggested that the group found their own theater, the Theater Royal (which later became a permanent venue for the festival until 2005). This theater that he was planning was excellently suited for staging certain operas.

The result was that a group of opera lovers - including Tom Walsh, who was elected first director of the festival - held a “Festival of Music and Art” (as the event was first called) from October 21 to November 4, 1951 ) planned. The highlight was a production of The Rose of Castile (1857), a little-known opera by 19th-century Irish composer Michael Balfe , which was also mentioned in a striking play on words by James Joyce in Ulysses .

In the next few years the Festival Opera positioned itself as a unique institution that, in addition to the works that are played everywhere, also always offered rarities, and this was widely noticed by the specialized press, which reported in detail on each season.

In the first decade, Wexford offered its enthusiasts and specialist public, increasingly interested in the rare works, rarities such as Lortzing's Wildschütz and (for the time) obscure works such as Bellini's La sonnambula , with Marilyn Cotlow (* 1924) as "Adina" and Nicola Monti (1920-1993) as "Elvino". Bryan Balkwill (1927–2007), Charles Mackerras and John Pritchard were among the young conductors who subsequently worked with famous producers and designers such as Micheál Mac Liammóir . For the time, the results were astounding and the festival soon attracted leading opera talent, new and established alike.

It was increasingly possible to recruit singers such as Nicola Monti, Afro Poli (1902–1988), Franco Calabrese and Paolo Pedani as well as up-and-coming British and Irish young stars such as Heather Harper , Bernadette Greevy , Thomas Hemsley and Geraint Evans (1922–1992) here present.

The 1960 season did not take place because of the renovation of the theater. When it opened in September 1961, Verdi's Ernani was presented.

Problems with maintaining the Irish Radio Orchestra led to the use of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra for this one season, but the Irish radio orchestra was called in again the following year, which is why it proved itself here until 2005.

L'amico Fritz helped the talented young Irish singers Veronica Dunne and Bernadette Greevy to international attention in1962, while other famous names from the 1960s, such as Mirella Freni in Bellini's I puritani, could be heard. Jules Massenet's Don Quixote led to another outstanding event in 1965 with the bass veteran Miroslav Čangalović as Cervantes' old knight.

Albert Rosen (1924–1997), a young conductor from Prague, began a long-term collaboration with the institution in 1965, who directed eighteen Wexford productions. He later became chief conductor of the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra and at the time of his death in 1997 he was its honorary conductor.

Wexford under Brian Dickie (1967–1973)

In 1967, Walter Legge was asked to direct the festival, but within a month of his appointment, he suffered a serious heart attack and was forced to retire. Brian Dickie (* 1941), a 26-year-old former student at Trinity College, took over the management of the festival. A new era with outstanding vocal soloists emerged, with Glinka's first operas in Russian and works from the Czech repertoire, but at the same time a new accent in the French repertoire such as Delibes Lakmé (1970) and Georges Bizet's Perlenfischer (1971).

Wexford under Thomson Smillie (1974–1978)

Dickie was persuaded to return to Glyndebourne, but his successor in 1974 was Thomson Smillie, who came from the Scottish Opera . He campaigned for a production of three operas each. Much was neglected during this period, with Massenet's operas quickly becoming his favorites, and Smillie staging about Thaïs in his first season, and then continued that choice with a number of other operas by the composer, the seldom heard Sapho was produced in 2001.

In 1976 Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw was presented along with a rarity by Cimarosa , the one-man piece Il maestro di cappella . Other rare 18th-century Italian operas were presented in 1979 and beyond.

Wexford under Adrian Slack (1979–1981)

Adrian Slack mainly focused on Italian opera. There were some exceptions such as B. Handel's opera Orlando , Floyds Of Mice and Men and Mozart's Zaide . Spontini's La vestale was unforgettable because of a mishap, as all of the performers slipped on a steep, smooth surface of the stage, as impressively described by Bernard Levin.

Wexford under Elaine Padmore (1982-1994)

Elaine Padmore was a producer for the BBC who had previously organized the broadcasts of the productions on that channel. During her tenure as artistic director, she fanned out a wide range of music and singers, with many notable productions at Wexford. For example, she introduced Sergei Leiferkus to an audience outside Russia for the first time together with many other newcomers such as the American dramatic soprano Alessandra Marc . Other outstanding productions included the two productions by debutante Francesca Zambello , who first performed Donizetti's L'assedio di Calais in 1991 and Tchaikovsky's opera Slippery in 1993 .

From 1982 onwards, Padmore realized a new idea, namely the performance of “opera scenes”, ie excerpts from operas. This proved to be an inexpensive alternative for younger audiences as well as offering more work to the choir. The idea turned out to be very successful.

Michael Balfes The Rose of Castile , which had already been excavated at the beginning of the festival activities, was revived in a professional production in the spring of 1991, directed by Nicolette Molnár and set by John Lloyd Davies, making the festival now its 40th birthday celebrated.

Wexford under Luigi Ferrari (1995-2004)

In 1995 Padmore was replaced as artistic director by Luigi Ferrari, then director of the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro and later director of the Teatro Comunale Bologna . Of course, he developed his own style by preferring Italian and late romantic works such as Giacomo Meyerbeer's L'étoile du nord in 1996.

In 1994 the festival began a four-year series of commercial recordings, with radio broadcasts from the festival from the start, and many seasonal programs also broadcast on the BBC . The fiftieth festival in 2001 was a special event with the introduction of surtitles .

Wexford under David Agler (since 2005)

David Agler became Artistic Director and has selected the programs since 2005. He is an American conductor who was previously the musical director of the Vancouver Opera and a permanent conductor of the San Francisco Opera .

A follow-up idea to the original idea of the "Opera Scenes" was the concept of "Operas in Short Form": Mainstream works were then administered in highly concentrated doses, and this developed into an extraordinary success.
