Fernando del Valle
Fernando del Valle (* 28. February 1964 as Brian Skinner in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is an American opera singer ( tenor ).
family
He adopted the name del Valle in honor of his grandfather Fernando Meléndez del Valle, who was also a tenor at the time. He is the great-great-grandson of Andrés del Valle Rodríguez, who was President of El Salvador in 1876 and is also a direct descendant of Colonel José María San Martín y Ulloa , President of El Salvador (1854–56) and founder of the city of Santa Tecla in El Salvador. He is the nephew of the architect Manuel Roberto Meléndez Bischitz .
biography
Fernando del Valle is a graduate of Tulane University and Southern Methodist University in Dallas , Texas . At the latter he received a professional scholarship from the Dallas Opera . He is also a graduate of the Merola Opera Program at the San Francisco Opera , where he studied from 1992 to 1993 and won the Bel Canto competition in Chicago, which is why he moved to Italy to study under Carlo Bergonzi and later Thomas Hayward. Del Valle has lived in Darmstadt since 2000.
Beginnings
Del Valle made his operatic debut in 1981 at the age of 17 in the role of First Shepherd in the production of John Blow's Venus and Adonis , performed at Loyola University of the South. In the following year he appeared as tenor in Johann Sebastian Bach's St. Matthew Passion with the New Orleans Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. 1986 saw his first appearance at the Jordan Hall in Boston with the Christmas Oratorio , also by JS Bach. He won the Boston Premiere Ensembles Young Artist competition. The following spring he sang with the Beethoven Society of New York at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center.
Del Valle expanded his repertoire and pursued his career as an opera tenor with appearances in works such as Ludwig van Beethoven's Missa solemnis and the Requien by Giuseppe Verdi , Benjamin Britten and Andrew Lloyd Webber . In 1993 the tenor made his Carnegie Hall debut with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Great Mass in C minor. In 1994 he sang as tenor in the Messiah , accompanied by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. In 1995 he made his European debut in Beethoven's 9th Symphony, together with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, under the direction of Alun Francis . Del Valles first European opera appearance was in the Hugo de Ana production of Carmen at the Teatro Comunale in Treviso, in the role of Don José under the direction of Peter Maag . In 1996 he played Rodolfo in a La Bohème production at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma.
1997 until today
In 1997 del Valle appeared as Don José in the Gran Teatro La Fenice in Venice , as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly in the Palm Beach Opera, and as Faust (Gounod) in Colmar , France. He made his German debut in 1998 as Rodolfo at the Frankfurt Opera with Klauspeter Seibel . In the same year he also performed at the Wexford Festival in Ireland. Since 1999 Del Valle has been heard in numerous locations around the world, for example in Frankfurt, Maastricht, at the Saarland State Theater in Saarbrücken , in Düsseldorf, Berlin, Munich, Helsinki, Belo Horizonte in Brazil, Baveno in Italy (RAI di Torino), Wiesbaden, Mannheim, Karlsruhe, Kassel and Hamburg. Del Valle was first tenor in the ensemble of the Staatstheater Darmstadt (under the direction of Marc Albrecht ) and Friedrich Meyer-Oertel for a few years , followed by appearances in Israel, Korea, Sicily, Sydney, Lisbon and Prague.
In 2003 Ricarda Jacobi , a student of Oskar Kokoschka , painted his portrait.
Since 2011 he no longer appears on the big stage, but works as a freelance singer, which is due to his health. He likes to perform for charitable purposes. He keeps his repertoire in good shape through regular vocal exercises and rehearsals at the State Theater with a pianist.
health
In 1995 Fernando del Valle was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus (type 1 diabetes) at the age of 31 . Today he suffers from diabetic retinopathy , glaucoma , macular degeneration , diabetic cardiomyopathy and diabetic neuropathy .
