Il giuramento ( Italian for The Oath ) is an opera (original name: "Melodramma") in three acts by Saverio Mercadante . The libretto written Gaetano Rossi based on the tragedy Angelo, tyran de Padoue by Victor Hugo . The work premiered on March 11, 1837 at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. The plot is similar to that of Amilcare Ponchielli's opera La Gioconda , as it is based on the same drama by Victor Hugo.

Elaisa loves Viscardo, but he is in love with Bianca. When Bianca's husband Manfroce suspects that his wife is unfaithful, he decides to kill her with poison. Elaisa saves Bianca by swapping the poison with a sleeping pill. When Viscardo finds Bianca sleeping in Elaisa's palace, he believes Elaisa murdered her rival and stabs Elaisa to death. Only when Bianca wakes up does Viscardo realize that Elaisa has sacrificed her happiness for his.

The German premiere under the title The Oath took place in Berlin in 1839.

Il giuramento is not part of the standard repertoire of opera houses today, but is occasionally performed as a rarity, for example at the Wexford Festival Opera 2002.
