Jacopo Foroni (born July 26, 1825 in Verona ; died September 8, 1858 in Stockholm ) was an Italian conductor and opera composer. Verdi's contemporary celebrated his greatest success as court conductor and composer in Stockholm.

Life

Foroni came from a family of musicians in Verona, where he was trained by his father Domenico and Alberto Mazzucato . Foroni worked as a conductor in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. In 1848 his Semiseria opera Margherita was premiered with great success at the Teatro Re in Milan. Foroni was thus one of the most promising composing talents in Italy.

Due to his participation in the Milan uprising of 1848 Foroni left Italy and traveled to Sweden in December 1848, where he first became conductor of the opera company of Vincenzo Galli at Mindre Teatern in Stockholm. From 1849 he directed performances of the Italian repertoire in Stockholm, including Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia , Donizetti's Parisina , Linda di Chamounix , Lucrezia Borgia , Lucia di Lammermoor , Bellini's Beatrice di Tenda and Verdi's I Lombardi , and later (for the first time in Sweden) works by Richard Wagner .

In 1849, Foroni's historic opera Cristina, regina di Svezia was premiered in Italian at Mindre Teatern . The opera in the tradition of late bel canto was very successful, and In the same year Foroni became court conductor of the Royal Swedish Opera, succeeding Johan Fredrik Berwald . In this function he also composed court music and interludes in theater performances. Foroni also conducted symphonies by Beethoven and Schumann and became an influential figure in Swedish musical life.

In 1858, while he was still working on the opera buffa Advokaten Pathelin , his first opera in Swedish, Foroni died of cholera at the age of 33 .

Because of his untimely death and his stay on the periphery of European musical life, Foroni is now all but forgotten. It was not until 2010 that his opera Cristina, regina di Svezia was performed again in Gothenburg . In 2013 the opera was performed again at the Wexford Festival Opera and in 2016 at the Staatstheater Oldenburg .
