Elia Kahvedjian escaped the Armenian genocide with his sister in 1915 , while 160 members of his family were killed. He came to an orphanage in Nazareth and came into contact with photography through one of his teachers. So he later went to Jerusalem as a photographer. Thousands of photos of historical Palestine , Jordan and Syria were taken .

During the Palestine War in 1948, Kahvedjian hid his collection of negatives in an attic. The pictures were not found again until 1987 and today represent valuable historical documents about life in the Middle East. His son Kevork self-published a selection of the pictures.
