Greer Grimsley (born May 30, 1956 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is an American opera singer ( bass baritone ).

life and career

Grimsley was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1956, where he attended Brother Martin High School. He studied singing at Loyola University New Orleans and the Juilliard School in New York City . He made his operatic debut in 1980 at the Houston Grand Opera as one of the two armed men in Mozart's Magic Flute .

Grimsley first became famous in the mid-1980s as Escamillo on Peter Brook's international tour La Tragédie de Carmen , an award-winning adaptation of Georges Bizet's Carmen . In 1988 he made his debut as Jochanaan in Richard Strauss ' Salome at the Scottish Opera. Since then he has sung at all the major American opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera , the Lyric Opera of Chicago , the Seattle Opera and the Houston Grand Opera . He has also made guest appearances at many European stages, including the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona , the Deutsche Oper Berlin , the Teatro Comunale di Bologna and at the Bayreuth Festival .

He has been married to the mezzo-soprano Luretta Bybee since 1987 .
