Miriam Gauci (born April 3, 1959 in Vittoriosa , Malta ) is a Maltese opera singer (soprano).

Life

The soprano Miriam Gauci first studied with her aunt, the soprano Hilda Tabone, then switched to Lia Guarini at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan, Italy, and finally graduated from the Centro Perfezionamento Artisti Lirici del Teatro Alla Scala di Milano. After winning several competitions, she made her stage debut in Bologna in 1984 in Poulencs La Voix Humaine .

In Milan she made her debut at La Scala in the role of Proserpina in Luigi Rossi's Orfeo , when this work was given its first modern performance. In the following season she appeared in Die Frau ohne Schatten and La Sonnambula . She made her US debut in Santa Fé in 1987 when she sang the role of Madama Butterfly . She later took this role on with Naxos . Also in the USA, namely in Los Angeles, she sang Mimi from La Bohème , then in Hamburg the Liù from Turandot and at the Wexford Festival the Ginevra from Umberto Giordano's La Cena delle Beffe . Since then, Miriam Gauci has appeared at many larger European opera houses with an extensive repertoire ranging from Donna Elvira to Anna Bolena and Luisa Miller .

In addition to the opera, she maintains an extensive concert and song repertoire. Her voice, which can sound powerful but also gentle, is considered extremely versatile, although Gauci did not achieve the fame of some of her colleagues in the opera world. Her famous partners include tenors such as Plácido Domingo , Giacomo Aragall , Peter Dvorsky , and Francisco Araiza . She has worked with conductors such as Gianandrea Gavazzeni , Silvio Varviso , Zubin Mehta , Georges Prêtre , Riccardo Muti , Claudio Abbado and Wolfgang Sawallisch .

In 1993 she was awarded the Maltese Order of Merit by President Vincent Tabone . She is married to the conductor and pianist Michael Laus, who is also from Malta, and has one daughter.

Gauci is considered to be the leading Puccini interpreter of her generation.
