Gianandrea Gavazzeni

Gianandrea Gavazzeni (born July 25, 1909 in Bergamo ; † February 5, 1996 there ) was an Italian conductor , composer and musicologist .

Life

Gianandrea Gavazzeni was born in Via Pignolo in Bergamo in 1909. He studied at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome and from 1925 at the Conservatorio in Milan . There he attended Renzo Lorenzoni's piano class and studied composition with Ildebrando Pizzetti and Mario Pilati . In Milan, Gavazzeni also frequently attended the performances at the Teatro alla Scala under the direction of Arturo Toscanini .

From 1932 Gavazzeni concentrated on conducting, preferring above all the Italian opera of the 19th century, as well as the symphonies of the German Romantics and a few works of the 20th century. In particular, he tried to bring forgotten works back onto the stage.

Until 1968 he was artistic director at the Teatro alla Scala, which in 1985 awarded him the Una vita per la musica (German: A life for music ) medal . In 1981/82 he was awarded the Premio Abbiati .

Gavazzeni is best known as a conductor of Italian operas. He made great contributions to the renaissance of the works of Gaetano Donizetti, who was also born in Bergamo . His performance of Donizetti's opera Anna Bolena on April 14, 1957 at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan with Maria Callas in the title role is particularly well known . The 2006 opera festival at the Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo is dedicated to the memory of the 10th anniversary of his death.

As a composer, he wrote several concerts and sonatas, including the Concerto bergamasco and the song The Song of St Alexander .
