André Juillard (born June 9, 1948 in Paris ) is a French comic artist and illustrator , who became known for historical comics .

Career

After studying at l'école des arts décoratifs in Paris, Juillard began his career in 1974 with the magazine Formule 1 , for which he drew the western story La Longue Piste de Loup Gris based on a scenario by Claude Verrien . An adaptation of Romeo and Juliet for Djin magazine followed . His first series about the knight Bohémond de Saint-Gilles published Formule 1 from 1976. The text was again by Claude Verrien. At the same time he worked for Djin on the series Isabelle Fantouri and Les Cathares .

For the magazine Pif Gadget he created a few short stories with Patrick Cothias and Jean Ollivier , with whom he created the series Les Sept Vies de l'Épervier , set in the time of Henry IV, from 1982 . From 1983 he worked with Jacques Martin on Arno , which was played in Napoleon's time . In addition to the series, Juillard also created a number of individual works, illustrated books and title pages, postcards and posters.

In 1993 he also created the scenario for Le Cahier Bleu .

As early as 1987, the Edgar P. Jacobs Foundation offered him the continuation of the story The Three Formulas by Professor Sato . He declined because he did not feel ready for such a venture. A rapprochement with Blake and Mortimer came in 1998 in L'Aventure immobile , the first volume in the La Dernier Chapitre series , written by Didier Convard and depicting the return of the aged title characters to Egypt, the scene of their second adventure. In the same year Dargaud decided that a second team would be formed in order to ensure a more consistent release of the series, which had successfully restarted in 1996 around the adventurers Francis Blake and Philip Mortimer. Juillard applied and was accepted. The collaboration with the copywriter Yves Sente began with the preprint of Die Voronov-Intrige (1999) . Then came the double volume The sarcophagi of the 6th continent (2003-2004) out, which was followed by the indirect sequel The Sanctuary of Godwana (2008). Further albums were released under the title The Vow of the Five Lords (2012), The Staff of Plutarch (2014) and The Testament of William S. (2016), his last work for this series to date.
