Markus Werba (born November 14, 1973 in Villach , Austria ) is an Austrian opera singer ( baritone ).

Life

At the age of 16, Markus Werba began his career with vocal training. This was followed by studies at the Klagenfurt University of Music and at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Ralf Döring. He continued his vocal training with Robert Holl and Walter Berry . He is particularly committed to the baritone voices as Count Almaviva , Don Giovanni , Guglielmo and Papageno in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's operas.

In the years 1998–2000, Werba was a member of the Vienna Volksoper ensemble . He took part in numerous international competitions. Other professional positions have included the Salzburg Festival , the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera , the Zurich Opera House , the Hamburg State Opera , the Bavarian State Opera , the Komische Oper Berlin , the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma , the Piccolo Teatro di Milano , the Teatro Comunale di Bologna in Bologna and the Teatro Malibran in Venice .

His first CD was made with Julius Drake , and includes pieces by Ludwig van Beethoven , Franz Schubert , Robert Schumann and Hugo Wolf .

At the side of his teacher Walter Berry (as first priest or speaker) Markus Werba sang Papageno in Mozart's Magic Flute in January 2000 in a production of the Salzburg State Theater (production: Harry Kupfer ). It was thanks to a coincidence that Werba made his debut as Papageno in 2005 at the Salzburg Festival. Simon Keenlyside , originally intended for the cast of Papageno, was unable to attend due to an injury, so Werba took his place. In 2012 he sang this role in the Salzburg Festival production under Nikolaus Harnoncourt . Together with the artists Charles Spencer, Julius Drake, Graham Johnson and Helmut Deutsch he was also involved as a lieder singer and sang sacred and symphonic works by Brahms , Mozart and Orff .
