Bryan Hymel

Bryan Hymel (born August 8, 1979 in New Orleans ) is an American opera and concert singer with a tenor voice .

Life

Youth and education

Bryan Hymel was born and raised in New Orleans and learned to play the piano and trumpet as a child. He graduated from Jesuit High School. At the age of nineteen, he became known to opera audiences by winning the Verdi Aria Competition at the Aspen Music Festival . A year later, Hymel was the youngest participant to be a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and received a grant from the George London Foundation for Singers . After completing his bachelor's degree in singing from Loyola University New Orleans , he took part in the Merola Opera Program of the San Francisco Opera . After his time there, he attended the renowned Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia , where he studied with Bill Schuman.

Career

1998 Hymel made his professional debut as a messenger of the Philistines in Samson et Dalila by Camille Saint-Saëns at the New Orleans Opera . Here he played many other roles, including Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti , Luigi in Il tabarro and Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini . After the debut in his hometown, Hymel sang Tamino in Die Zauberflöte by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi at the Opera Grand Rapids . In 2007 he made his European debut at the Wexford Festival Opera in the role of Prince in Rusalka by Antonín Dvořák . Later that year he made his recital debut in New York with Michelle DeYoung . He also sang at Carnegie Hall with the Opera Orchestra of New York in a gala concert in honor of conductor Eve Queler , in which Renée Fleming , Marcello Giordani and Dolora Zajick performed .

Since then, Hymel has performed at many leading opera houses in Europe as well as in North and South America, for example as Don José in Carmen by Georges Bizet at the Royal Opera House in London, with the Canadian Opera Company and the Simon Bolivar Orchestra in Caracas , conducted by Sir Simon Rattle and at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan . He sang the role of Pinkerton in Puccini's Madama Butterfly with the English National Opera and the Canadian Opera Company, the Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca at the Opéra National de Bordeaux , the Guido in A Florentine Tragedy by Alexander von Zemlinsky and the Arturo in I Puritani by Vincenzo Bellini at the Greek National Opera in Athens , the ENEE in Les Troyens by Hector Berlioz at the Netherlands Opera and the Prince in Dvořák's Rusalka at the Boston Lyric Opera .

In July 2012, Hymel replaced Jonas Kaufmann , who was ill, in the role of Énée in Berlioz ' Les Troyens at the Royal Opera House. And in this role, too, he replaced Marcello Giordani on December 26, 2012 and in all subsequent appearances in the 2012/2013 opera season at the Metropolitan Opera. As Archangel Michael, he was heard at the 2013 Salzburg Festival in the opera Jeanne d'Arc - Scenes from the Life of Saint Johanna by Walter Braunfels .

In the 2013/2014 opera season he performed Arrigo in Verdi's I vespri siciliani at the Royal Opera House, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly at the Vienna State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera, Edgar in Giacomo Puccini's opera of the same name at the Frankfurt Opera and Arnold from Guillaume Tell by Gioachino Rossini at the Munich Opera Festival .

In November 2014 Hymel sang the role of Polyeucte in a concert performance of Gaetano Donizetti's opera Les Martyrs from 1840. The opera was performed with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment at London's Royal Festival Hall . In the 2014/2015 opera season he was Don José in Carmen at the New Orleans Opera, as Riccardo Percy in Donizetti's Anna Bolena at the Lyric Opera of Chicago , as Arnold in Guillaume Tell at the Bavarian State Opera , as Rodolfo in Puccini's La Bohème at the Dallas Opera and as Énée at the San Francisco Opera.

In the 2015/2016 opera season he was Don José at the Washington National Opera and at the Royal Opera House in London. The Opéra National de Paris saw him as Faust in La damnation de Faust by Hector Berlioz and the Metropolitan Opera as Rodolfo in Puccini's La Bohème. He also made his debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Duke of Mantua in Verdi's Rigoletto and sang Alfredo in Verdi's La traviata in Paris.

The 2016/2017 opera season took him to the Metropolitan Opera (as Arnold in Guillaume Tell ), to La Scala in Milan and to the Castell de Peralada Festival (as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly ), to the Opéra National de Paris (as Don Carlos in Verdi's eponymous Opera) and the Aspen Music Festival (as Faust in La Damnation de Faust ).

In the 2017/2018 opera season he gave Arrigo in I vespri siciliani at the Royal Opera House, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées , Canio in Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo and Turiddù in Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni at the Royal Opera House and Rodolfo, Don José and Arrigo at the Bavarian State Opera.

Bryan Hymel is also represented on the concert stage. In the 2015/2016 season, for example, he sang the tenor part in Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th Symphony at La Scala in Milan , conducted by Gustavo Dudamel . He had concert appearances in the Smetana Concert Hall in Prague , at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris and in the Wigmore Hall in London. He interpreted Verdi's Messa da Requiem with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra under Yannick Nézet-Séguin and at the Edinburgh Festival under Donald Runnicles , Fausts Verdammnis with the Orchester National du Capitole de Toulouse , Roger Waters Ça Ira at the Festival in Gothenburg and with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra as well Berlioz ' Requiem (Grande messe des morts) with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchester National du Capitole de Toulouse. He gave solo concerts under the direction of Frédéric Chaslin in Jerusalem and a New Year's concert under the direction of Emmanuel Villaume took him to Oman . He also toured with artists such as Susan Graham and Elina Garanca . In 2008 he made his debut with a recital at the renowned Rosenblatt Recitals .

Hymel's first solo album Héroïque reached number 3 on the Billboard Classical Music Charts and was awarded the Georges Thill Prize by the Académie du Disque Lyrique in 2015 .
