Frédéric Chaslin
Frédéric Chaslin (* 1963 in Paris ) is a French composer, conductor and pianist.
Life
From 1991 to 1994 he was general music director of the Opéra de Rouen, from 2004 to 2006 general music director of the Mannheim National Theater , from October 2010 to September 2013 chief conductor of the Santa Fe Opera (USA) and since September 2011 music director of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra .
Chaslin received his training at the Conservatoire de Paris and the Salzburg Mozarteum . In 1989 he began his career as an assistant to Daniel Barenboim in Paris and at the Bayreuth Festival . From 1989 to 1991 he was Pierre Boulez's assistant at the Ensemble intercontemporain . Chaslin made his international debut as a conductor in 1991 at the Wien Modern Festival , when Boulez had to cancel at short notice.
From 1993 to 1996 he conducted at the Bregenz Festival . He made his debut at the Vienna State Opera in 1997, where he has conducted over 200 performances since then. There he directed many performances, especially of the Italian repertoire, such as Il barbiere di Siviglia , La Bohème , L'elisir d'amore , Guillaume Tell , Lucia di Lammermoor , Macbeth , Tosca , La traviata , I puritani , Roberto Devereux , Stiffelio and Mefistofele as well as Les contes d'Hoffmann and La Juive .
In 2002 he made his debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera where he conducted five productions. Guest appearances have taken him to Berlin, Munich, Leipzig, Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, Venice, Paris, London, Los Angeles and Tokyo. In the 2016/2017 season he made his debut at the Dresden Semperoper with a new production of Hoffmann's stories .
Works
Frederic Chaslin composed three operas, including Wuthering Heights based on Emily Brontë's novel Sturmhöhe to a libretto by PH Fisher. Diana Damrau recorded the “Vocalise” from it on her CD Diana Forever .
He also wrote numerous songs and orchestral pieces.
Chaslin has written a book on contemporary music, In Search of the New Sound, and a novel about Gustav Mahler , On achève bien Mahler.
