The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra , the Symphony Orchestra of the Israeli Radio .

history

The orchestra goes back to a radio orchestra that was founded in 1936 by the British Mandate Administration of Palestine as the Kol Israel Orchestra . It won its followers through the regular Tuesday concerts in the auditorium of the Jerusalem YMCA. It changed its name in the 1970s and moved to the Henry Crown Symphony Hall of the newly built Jerusalem Cultural Center in 1985 . The relatively small orchestra with approx. 80 ensemble members, among them no musicians of Palestinian origin, is subsidized by the Israeli Radio, the Jerusalem Commune and the Israel Ministry of Culture.

The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra also goes on international tours as part of Israeli cultural policy . Since 2011 there have been repeated hostilities and disruptions to the concerts from supporters of the BDS movement. A concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London had to be interrupted in 2011 and a concert tour through South America in August 2018 led to disruptions and hostility.

repertoire

In addition to the classical repertoire, the orchestra dedicated itself to contemporary music, including Israeli composers. It was selected for world premieres by the composers Sofia Gubaidulina , Henri Dutilleux and Alfred Schnittke . Together with members of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Krzysztof Penderecki 's Seventh Symphony was premiered in 1997 under the direction of Lorin Maazel .
