In order to increase national interest in and support for the Metropolitan Opera, the Metropolitan Opera National Council was founded in 1952 by August Belmont , which has hosted the annual Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions since 1954 . The aim of the singing competition is to discover, support, nurture and develop young opera singers from the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

organization

The competition is held in four phases: District Competitions, Regional Competitions, Semi Final Competitions and Final Competition. Each phase is judged by a jury made up of representatives from the Metropolitan Opera. There are a total of 14 regional competitions in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico and 42 district competitions in each region. The winners of the district competition compete in the regional competitions. Regional winners will be invited to New York City to compete on the Metropolitan Opera stage in the national semi-finals.
